When I was a young boy my best friend in the world was from Taiwan. I learned a lot about not only his culture but that of many Asian Cultures. Many of those early learning’s have stuck with me to this present day and has inspired my interests. But what I am really having a hard time understanding is how can such a culture that is responsible for the beauty of Eastern Philosophies and Eastern Belief Systems that promote respect and balance with all life be enemy number one to our own survival.
Japan maybe an Economic Power on this planet but Japan’s leaders are truly a disease. There only interest is money and will be responsible for the genocide of many of this planet’s species who keep our worlds very delicate balance in check. Their leaders do whatever they want to, ignoring whaling laws and scientific facts and basing most of their arguments that their culture will not be dictated by westerners. The fact is that their only true culture comes in the form of dollar signs. If it did not, then why is it that Japan has to buy their supporters in the U.N.? And why is it that the majority of their bought supports in the U.N. are what are considered third world countries that are at the bottom of the economic scale in the world economy? Japan will always deny this and so will the countries that have been bought. The very sad news is because of Japan’s greed and U.N. support buying many of animals that we as humans relay on to keep our planet’s balance in check are now facing extinction on a higher level.
This past Thursday at the 175 nation convention on international trade in endangered species too place and proposals that would have protected polar bears, coral, bluefin tuna and several species of sharks from the fin trade fell due to Japan’s bought U.N. supporters. Japan then celebrated with their victory with their bought supporters by serving one of the endangered species (bluefin tuna served as sushi) on top of a bowl or rice at their Qatar embassy.
When is this going to stop??? When are we as people with a voice going to step up??? We all need to ban together and put Japan’s leaders in a spot, so that we can put a stop this type of corruption. This is not culture anymore, this is about money. We cannot rely on governments or politics to solve this problem. We need to step up and take part to stop these trades and take an active role in protecting these species. It is not just about saving endangered species or our environment. The big picture is that through protecting whales, sharks and polar bears and protecting our environment we are saving our own lives. We are securing a future for the human species…

As a long-time animal rights activist, I’ve often heard people say things like “who cares, they’re just animals” and “well, they were put here for our use,” and countless other justifications. The point you make about the delicate balance of the ecosystem of the world and how it relates to our very survival is one that clearly still needs to be pounded home. I also think people need to understand that the Earth does not need us, we need it. No matter what we do to it, it will still be standing. Even if we damage it, raze it, and leave it a desolate wasteland, it will still prevail. We, however, will not. When we become a plague to our planet, its immune system will kick in and take out that sickness. We do not have the power to completely destroy the Earth, however the Earth has the power to take us out of the equation. Every show of disrespect towards the other beings who share this planet with us is a step towards our own complete destruction. That may sound over-dramatic, but I think if one gave it some real thought, it’s merely logic.
